The History

Mulago National Referral hospital was founded in 1913 and in 1962 it was expanded by constructing lower Mulago to offer better services and facilities to patients.

It serves as a National Referral for the entire country and a general hospital as well as Health Center IV, III for the Kampala metropolitan. Official bed capacity is 1790.


To provide super-specialized healthcare, training and conduct research in line with the requirement of Ministry of Health.

  • When can i visit a patient?

    Our visiting hours are: 6:30-8:00am, 1:00-2:00pm, 5:00-8:00pm.

  • Is Medical care at Mulago Free?

    Yes, its free apart from the private wing and scanning services

  • How is Mulago Hospital funded?

    Mulago Hospital gets all its funding from the Uganda government.

  • Can one have a kidney transplant at Mulago?

    At the moment, our renal unit only offers dialysis. We are building capacity to start kidney transplants in the near future.
